If you are a student and want to earn a little extra money during the summer months, join BASF in Ludwigshafen as a summer temp worker and support our production in regular or rotating shifts.

What you can expect as a summer temp worker at BASF

Period of work and working hours

As a summer temp worker, you will support BASF employees in production plants during your semester break, for a period of at least seven weeks and no more than four months between June and September.

You will work on the normal shift (Monday to Friday from around 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) or on the rotating shift (from around 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., including on Sundays and public holidays).

Tasks

In our production units, you will operate plant sections both on site and via the control room, monitor production processes and take samples for quality control. You will also help with filling liquid and solid products into large and small containers and prepare them for transportation, with moving heavy barrels and containers within our production plants, with storing and retrieving palletized containers, and with cleaning.

Who we are looking for

If you want to work as a summer temp worker at BASF, you must be at least 18 years old and a student at a German university, and have good German skills. A driver’s license valid in Germany is an advantage.

You must attend a safety briefing before starting work.

What we offer

We offer the opportunity to work in a skilled team with an attractive monthly wage of up to €3,130 gross. If you work on the rotating shift, you will also receive the applicable Sunday, holiday and night shift bonuses in line with the wage agreement for the chemicals industry.

Please note that, due to the large volume of applications, you may only receive notice of acceptance in the form of an employment contract by mail shortly before the start of work.

If you have not received notice of acceptance or rejection, your application is still being processed. This means that candidates on the waiting list may not receive final notice until June/July.

Selection criteria

Who can apply?

Only students enrolled at a German university or university of applied sciences who are at least 18 years of age may apply.

Advanced German is essential.

A driver’s license is required for some positions.

Do I need to complete a safety test?

You do not need to complete a safety test, but you will receive a safety briefing before you start work.

Working as a summer temp worker

Is there a minimum period of work for summer temp workers?

Yes, you must work for at least seven weeks.

In which areas will summer temp workers be deployed?

They will work in production only.

What kind of work can I expect as a summer temp worker?

You will operate plant sections both on site and via the control room, monitor production processes and take samples for quality control. As well as filling, preparing and transporting liquid and solid products in large and small containers, you will also work on product filling and on cleaning the filling equipment. You will also store and retrieve palletized containers, and perform various cleaning tasks.

Am I allowed to choose my area of assignment?

No, the positions are assigned by our Recruiting Services unit in Berlin. You have the option of choosing to work on either the normal or the rotating shift. Please state in the questionnaire whether you would prefer the normal or rotating shift. You can also choose both. However, we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to your chosen shift.

Do I need to be available before I am due to start work?

Yes, you will be invited to an orientation event a few days before the start of work.

If I work as a summer temp worker, should I expect my earnings to be subject to social security contributions?

Yes, that is possible. Because social security contributions depend on so many different criteria, it is impossible to provide a general answer here.

Can the time spent as a summer temp worker be counted towards a mandatory internship?

Unfortunately not.
